Atrial Fibrillation awareness month: week two

Welcome to week two of our Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month.

Hospitalizing more than 850,000 Americans each year, cardiac arrhythmias encompass a widespread set of debilitating illnesses. This week, I’d like to address how one can actively decrease his or her risk of developing an arrhythmia.

While some cases of arrhythmias are genetically inherited, certain lifestyle factors can impact one's risk of developing an arrhythmia. Habits such as smoking, drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, and consuming too much caffeine can increase one's risk of developing an arrhythmia.

One preventative measure that can be taken includes altering diet. A study from NCBI shows that omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of sudden cardiac death. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in certain fish, such as salmon or sardines. In general, a healthy diet that includes plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and is low in cholesterol, saturated fat, and trans fat is highly recommended. Additionally, factors such as mental and emotional stress can a driving force in the development of an arrhythmia. Therefore, incorporating healthy habits into your life, such as consuming a well-balanced diet and reducing stress, may help in preventing you from being the 850,001st person to enter a hospital due to arrhythmia.

There are also other health conditions that increase the risk of developing an arrhythmia. These health conditions include diabetes, obesity, sleep apnea, and high cholesterol. If you have one of these conditions, it’s imperative to be aware of the potential link to arrhythmia and schedule regular check-ups with your physician.

While the development of an arrhythmia is not 100% avoidable, the recommendations mentioned above can be taken to help prevent the development of one. Here at BioSig, we want to ensure that all steps are taken to potentially prevent another case of arrhythmia.

If you have any questions about this widespread illness and want to learn more about what we aim to do to improve the treatment of arrhythmias with our novel PURE EP System, please get in touch with us at info@biosigtech.com.
